around the township of Mt Morgan, directly east of the mine lease. Further downstream and southwest of the town, the land use is densely vegetated and predominantly natural/rural, with minor disturbances. An indication of the potential environmental damage from a TSF release can be obtained by assessing Matters of State Environmental Significance (MSES) likely to be impacted. The MSES are defined in the biodiversity state interest under the Queensland State Planning Policy and Environmental Offsets Regulation 2014 [5]. These matters include certain environmental values that are protected under Queensland legislation. The MSES likely to be impacted downstream were identified using the mapping data available through the Queensland Government Spatial Portal [6] and are presented in Figure 1.2. A brief description of the relevant protected areas in the region is summarised below: 1 Regulated Vegetation Essential Habitat: Refers to vegetation in which a species that is Endangered or Vulnerable under the Nature Conservation Act (1992). 2 Regulated Vegetation Category B: Refers to remnant vegetation in which species are in a regional ecosystem of least concern. 3 Regulated Vegetation Category R: Refers to native woody vegetation that is located within 50 metres of a regrowth watercourse. 4 Wildlife Habitat Endangered or Vulnerable Wildlife : Includes known habitat areas for all plants and animals listed as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable under the latest Queensland nature conservation legislation.
