3) Discussion/Conclusions The results indicated a reduction in some metals in the solids that were leached by the cyanide (ie; copper, silver, zinc and barium). Although these metals were leached from the solids, they were adsorbed onto the resin (to be subsequently recovered) resulting in a very low final solution concentration. An increase in calcium was observed, as a result of the lime added to increase the pH of the slurry. Since there was also a corresponding reduction in sulphur, then some gypsum (calcium sulphate) would be expected in the final tailings. There was also an increase in magnesium due to the precipitation of magnesium present in the water when the pH was increased. Therefore, the lime addition improves the water quality by reducing the concentrations of any magnesium or sulphates. The increase in sodium is a result of the sodium cyanide reagent added to the leach.
