Introduction
1.1 Overview The Mount Morgan Mine (MMM) is a former copper and gold mine located in Central Queensland which operated between 1882 and 1990. The mining activities have left a significant legacy of soil and water contamination, and the site is currently managed by the Queensland Government as a legacy mine site. Heritage Minerals Pty Ltd (Heritage Minerals) plans to commence operations at MMM through reprocessing of tailings produced from former gold and copper mining, following the construction of the processing plant and associated mine infrastructure and water management activities. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by Heritage Minerals to complete a review of groundwater quality data obtained from monthly groundwater monitoring and to prepare a report to comply with Environmental Authority (EA) conditions W7, W8 and W9. 1.2 Groundwater monitoring obligations Heritage Minerals’ operations at MMM are governed under the requirements of the EA: EPML00433013 Groundwater monitoring obligations defined under the EA are summarised below: Groundwater – W7: Groundwater quality must be monitored at the locations and frequency specified in Table W1 - Groundwater monitoring locations and frequency – W8: Groundwater quality must be monitored for the following parameters in the dissolved fraction: a. pH
b. Electrical conductivity c. Total dissolved salts d. Cyanide (HCN as CN) e. Aluminium f. Arsenic
g. Cadmium h. Chromium i. Cobalt j. Copper k. Lead l. Manganese m. Nickel n. Selenium o. Zinc
– W9: By 1 June 2024, the holder of this environmental authority must ensure that groundwater quality measured in accordance with condition W7 and W8 above does not show a deterioration in quality.
