Site setting
2.1 Site history MMM is located near the township of Mount Morgan, 38 kilometres (km) south-west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland (Figure 2.1). Following the discovery of gold at Mount Morgan in 1882, the site became one of the most productive gold and copper mines in the world (GHD, 2023). From 1882 to 1990, 133 million tonnes of waste rock and tailings were generated during the extraction of 250 tonnes (t) of gold and 360,000 t of copper (GHD, 2023). In 1992, the Queensland Government (the State) took on management of the legacy issues at the MMM and the site is currently managed under the Abandoned Mine Lands Program (AMLP). In 2003, the State developed a Rehabilitation Plan for the MMM which emphasised private investment for reprocessing of tailings and waste rock dumps to improve overall environmental outcomes (GHD, 2023). The Abandoned Mines Unit of the Department of Resources (DoR) are currently responsible for environmental management and compliance of the site in accordance with the Mt Morgan Phase 2 Agreement (GHD, 2023).
