5. Implementation of the Mitigation Planting site
5.1 Overview Management and propagation operations will involve collecting seeds when available, from the approximate 67 G. hockingsii plants within the impact area. These will be sent to an experienced nursery from Spring 2026 for propagation, with an anticipated transplant in the wet season of 2026/27 and/or 27/28. If insufficient seed is collected, then seed from an off-site seed orchard will be collected during 27/28 with an anticipated planting during 28/29 wet season. Cuttings and scion material will also be taken from select individuals. These will be propagated in the nursery to produce a minimum of 15 different clones via cuttings and grafting. These will then be distributed to botanic gardens in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, and Brisbane for display, study and planted in an off-site seed production orchard. The separate offsite seed orchard comprising of all the clones collected from the impact site will be established to produce seed if required. Excess seed collected from the impact site or seed orchard will be made available to Botanic and scientific organisations and institutions for study and research.
Key aspects of planting operations are outlined in the following sub-sections.
An overview of projected numbers/requirements to achieve ‘no net loss’ is provided in Table 1 . It is acknowledged that the anticipated number of seedlings required will be adjusted following each stage of the transplantation program.
