Hemiaspis damelii favours woodlands (typically brigalow Acacia harpophylla and belah Casuarina cristata), usually on heavier, cracking clay soils, particularly in association with water bodies or in areas with small gullies and ditches (gilgais). Distributed throughout the eastern interior, from central inland New South Wales, north to coastal areas near Rockhampton in Queensland. Within Queensland, records are known from near Goondiwindi and the adjacent Darling-Riverine Plain, from the Darling Downs and from the Lockyer Valley. The core area for the grey snake in the Brigalow Belt is south of the Great Dividing Range between Dalby and Glenmorgan (Rowland J. , 2012) The Fitzroy River turtle is endemic to the Fitzroy River catchment in Queensland. It occurs exclusively in the freshwater riverine habitats of the mid and lower reaches of the Fitzroy River and its tributaries (Limpus et al. 2011). The species occurs from the Fitzroy Barrage to Glebe Weir on the upper Dawson River, Duck Ponds on the lower Nogoa River upstream from the junction of the Comet and Mackenzie Rivers, and to the upper Conners River which links to Funnel Creek, and throughout permanent waters of Marlborough Creek (Johnson 2006; Limpus et al. 2011)

In Australia, Estuarine Crocodiles are found in northern coastal areas and drainages, from Broome in northwestern Western Australia to the Gladstone area in southeastern Queensland. They also occur on a number of islands off the Northern Territory and Queensland coasts which may be as far as 96km from the nearest point on the mainland. (Greer, 2006)
