Mount Morgan Mine Upper Mundic Gully TSF EA Amendment

1 Introduction This Tailings Management Plan (TMP) provides a high level framework for the development, operation and long term management of the Upper Mundic Gully (UMG) Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at the Mount Morgan Mine. This TMP applies specifically to the UMG TSF and outlines the strategies required to support future tailings deposition, ensure safe and compliant operation, and guide closure and post closure activities. The Mount Morgan operation includes three planned TSFs: — Upper Mundic Gully (UMG) — Open Cut Pit (OCP) — Sandstone Gully (SSG). The OCP and SSG facilities will be managed under separate TMPs, which will outline the unique operational and closure requirements for those TSFs. The strategies outlined in this TMP for the UMG TSF aim to reduce environmental, geotechnical and commercial risks, while supporting effective tailings management throughout the life of facility (LOF), closure and post closure phases. 1.1 Site description The Mt Morgan mine site is located near the town of Mt Morgan, approximately 38 km southwest of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The dominant feature at Mount Morgan is an OCP excavated to a depth of approximately 320 m below the original summit of Mount Morgan and is filled with tailings and water. The water in the OCP extends into the historic SSG TSF footprint to the southwest, following the failure of a retaining embankment, forming an interconnected water pond. A spillway on the eastern side of the OCP manages excess runoff from storm events. Several other historic TSFs and mine waste dumps are located around the site. The location of the proposed UMG TSF is within the natural upper Mundic Creek valley to the north-west of the mine site, located upstream est of a mine spoil dump and immediately north-west of the OCP (Figure 1.1). The mine spoil dump extends across the upper Mundic Creek valley and rainfall runoff ponds upstream of the spoil dump. A stormwater tunnel was excavated to the northeast of the dump to divert ponded water to Dam 8.
